Popular Medicine Causes Big Problems

Most consumers never stop to think about the damage that a painkiller might cause, especially when it's one as popular as Tylenol. Believe it or not, Tylenol liver failure is becoming a bigger problem than anyone ever thought possible, and this is mostly because people trust their pain medication to be safe. Unfortunately, acetaminophen is stronger than you might realize, especially since it is sold over the counter. Who hasn't given into the temptation to take another pill when the first didn't get rid of the pain quickly enough? Without ample warnings about the possibility of Tylenol liver failure on the medication, we are comfortable enough to continue dosing ourselves until the pain is gone.

Acetaminophen does cause liver damage, however. Right now, the recommended dose of Tylenol is no more than 4,000 milligrams per day, which is equal to eight extra strength tablets. Even following a steady regimen of the recommended dose has the possibility of introducing some problems with your liver. The FDA is working on some changes to the dose, but nothing has changed yet. These proposed changes include lowering the recommended daily does to 3,250 milligrams per day and adding stronger warnings to the labels. Any consumers that drink more than two alcoholic beverages per day are strongly cautioned to lower the daily dose of acetaminophen even further.

If you suffer from any decreased liver function for any reason, including kidney disease, hepatitis, malnutrition, AIDS, chronic ethanol abuse, or anorexia nervosa, you are at an even greater risk of Tylenol liver failure. Small children who use Children's Tylenol are also at risk. Even very small doses have been shown to cause liver damage and even death in children.

Tylenol has been on the market for over fifty years, but several health professionals feel that an accurate dosage has not yet been determined. Many different products have been recalled over the years, including several that were developed for use in children. Until safe doses have been decided, there will be risks associated with the use of Tylenol and other acetaminophen drugs. If you or someone you love has been injured due to an overdose of acetaminophen, there is help for you. You can find a class action lawsuit by speaking with an attorney about your situation. He or she can help you decide if you qualify for any damages or remedies from the makers of Tylenol.
